Acute Laminitis
Example of Laminitis
Though there are no “Founder Rings” in this hoof wall, this young part Saddle bred filly is clearly lamanitic. She continued to drain large abscesses much like the one shown here and demonstrated an Obel grade 4 lameness until she was offered a therapeutic package.
Radiograph of a Laminitic Hoof
Radiograph of P3(Distal Phalanx) rotation, sinking is evident as well within the hoof capsule.
Success! What Bean Taught Us
This is “Bean” 12 months after her ignorant owner used some sort of hand or power saw to remove some old shoes, throwing her into severe acute laminitis. She was treated by Sarah Spohnholtz in early 2006 and though these nails are nothing to brag about (her hoof felt like nailing a grapefruit in places!) at least she now had some hoof to nail at all. She really enjoyed the Steel and EDSS wedge support, could actually buck wildly after her first package. Her heel region still demonstrates the severe damage done, and that was about the length of hoof she had left (2” at the toe) after her little “surgery”. She went barefoot about 3 months after this first picture, totally sound at a trot as well as under saddle.
Special thanks to Chaos Valley Rescue for allowing us to share Bean's story and her superb follow up care.
